                   Portability (HIPAA) Coverage & Conversion Coverage

Individuals losing Group health or COBRA coverage from any insurer may be eligible for Individual Portability Coverage. This coverage does not require medical underwriting and has no waiting period for pre-existing medical conditions. Individuals must have had at least 18 months of prior creditable health insurance coverage with the most recent coverage being Group coverage, do not have other health insurance, group health coverage, Medicare, Medicaid, or AHCCCS, have enrolled in and exhausted COBRA coverage or continuation benefits (if available), and who have not had a break in coverage of more than 63 days may have special rights under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Other qualifications may apply. HIPAA/ Portability Plans are generally expensive. Portability plans are generally sold to the consumer directly by the health plan. 

 

It's also a good idea to check with your current health plan about the availability of a Conversion  Policy.  Conversion policies may have more limited benefits than the coverage it replaces, so ask the carrier a lot of questions to find out what's not covered (i.e.: Prescription drugs, office visits may be excluded).  

 

The purchase of a short-term health plan (explained above), conversion policy, or any other individual health insurance coverage would forfeit the option to purchase a HIPAA/Portability plan.
